Wally is a full sized, professional ventriloquist
figure, made by Insull and sold by the Davenport Magic Company
in England.
These hand crafted figures are made of papier machier and
have many optional movements. |

There are two heads for Wally. The second head needs repair work
and with the exception of blue eyes that look straight ahead and
to the left is the same as this one. The eyes on this figure turn
the full range from left to right.
Other movements are winkers or blinkers for both eyes, eyebrows
that move up and down,a sneer/upper lip smile, the moving lower
mouth, and flapping ears that have been disconnected. To reconnect,
the filler behind the ears has to be cut and the control wire
added. A simple proceedure.
Wally has at least one wig that was removed when I decided that
we both needed shaved heads.
The body was one of three made by Foy Brown of Lawrence. Kansas
in the sixties. Mr. Brown was a retired fireman and carved many
bodies for vents from that era. He added the ball joint for the
neck. This is the only surviving body, thanks to the rough treatment
by the airlines.
My first "figure" was purchase from Mr. Maher when
they were in Michigan. The eyebrows were made from Mrs. Maher's
old fur coat! This figure was a gift from my parents and a family
friend in 1955 or '56. He was named by a high school friend who
called me "Wally."
In 1960, I performed at the IBM convention in Boston at the request
of W.S. Berger. I credit Mr.
Berger with much of my success and cherish his memories and friendship.
He provided the second head that year to be used as a spare, and
I am sure that this is that one. Clinton Detweiler kept the heads
in great shape.
This figure has performed for three months at the Las Vegas Hilton
with Suzanne Somers, and a six week run at the Riviera with Andy
Gibb. We were the featured performer for several years at Resorts
Internationals properties in Atlantic City, Freeport, Bahamas,
and in the Paradise Island Casio, which is now "The Atlantis. |
